Solid Wood Restoration
Deep scratches, worn patches and tired finishes removed from solid hardwood floors in Barnet.
A solid hardwood floor is a long-term investment that rewards good care. Even floors that look beyond help — grey, deeply scratched or patchy — usually have plenty of life left.
Our Barnet team restores solid oak, maple, beech, walnut, ash and exotic hardwoods using dust-free sanding equipment and finishes suited to each timber. It is one of the core parts of our floor sanding service.
Common problems we fix
Scratches and scuffs from everyday wear
Bare, grey patches in busy areas
Old lacquer that has yellowed or flaked
Water damage and black stains around plants and sinks
Cupped or uneven boards
From survey to final coat
After a free survey and fixed quote, we protect the room and fix any loose boards. Where boards are split or rotten, we replace them through our solid floor repairs service. We then sand in several stages, from coarse to fine, until the surface is flat and clean.
Finishing touches
You can choose a natural oil for easy upkeep, or a tough lacquer for busy family rooms. If you would like a new colour, we can add floor staining first. Read our oil or lacquer guide for help choosing.
Timbers we restore
Each timber needs a slightly different approach. Dense maple needs careful final sanding to avoid visible marks. Walnut and cherry darken naturally and look best with a clear finish, while merbau and other exotic timbers contain natural oils that affect how finishes bond. Our products and process are matched to the timber in front of us.
Solid floors in schools, offices and halls get the same careful treatment, scheduled around your timetable. Out-of-hours working can be arranged for businesses. With good care, a restored hardwood floor can go many years before its next full sand.
A typical room takes one to two days, and you can walk on the floor in socks after a few hours. Furniture can usually go back after 24–48 hours.
Guarantee and aftercare
You get written care instructions and our 3-month service guarantee. Oiled floors can be refreshed with a simple re-oil rather than another full sand. See our prices for typical costs.

Questions about solid wood restoration
What do I need to do before you arrive?
Empty the room where possible and take down curtains that reach the floor. If you need help with heavy pieces, let us know when booking. Our guide to preparing your home has more tips.
How many coats does a floor need?
Oiled floors normally get two coats, and lacquered floors three. Busy hallways and commercial floors can have an extra coat for added protection.
Can you sand an engineered wood floor?
Usually, if the wear layer is at least 3 mm thick. We check the thickness during the free survey, often by lifting a threshold strip or a floor vent. Our engineered floor guide explains more.
How many times can a solid wood floor be sanded?
A solid wood floor can be sanded many times over its life. Each sand removes only a very thin layer when done properly, which is why period floors are still going strong after a century.
Oil or lacquer — which should I choose?
Oil soaks into the timber for a natural look and is easy to spot-repair. Water-based lacquer sits on top as a hard-wearing film that copes well with spills and busy households. We will help you choose at the survey — or read our guide to oil and lacquer.
Do you offer floor staining?
We do. After sanding we apply test patches on your timber so you can see how each shade looks in the room before we commit. Find out more about our staining service.
What our customers say
Quick, clean and professional
“We had the hallway and living room sanded and lacquered over two days. They protected the skirting and doors, and they hoovered up before leaving each evening.”
High Barnet
No more draughts
“Our front room was always cold because of the gaps in the boards. They filled them with pine slivers blend in perfectly and we have felt the difference already. They were upfront that filled gaps can move with the seasons, which I appreciated.”
New Barnet
Lacquered floor looking fresh
“Our lacquered oak had lots of fine scratches from the dog. A light abrade and new coat of lacquer has made it smooth and shiny again. Useful advice on felt pads and mats as well.”
