Bringing damaged parquet back together

Old parquet usually fails from below: the original adhesive dries out and blocks start to lift. Changes in humidity, underfloor heating and old water leaks can all break the bond between the blocks and the subfloor. In almost every case the floor can be saved.

What a parquet repair involves

  • Lifting loose and hollow blocks, cleaning off old adhesive and re-bonding them with a flexible modern adhesive

  • Sourcing matching reclaimed blocks for any that are missing or beyond repair

  • Rebuilding herringbone, chevron and basket-weave patterns, including borders

  • Dealing with uneven or damaged subfloors before re-laying

Repairs that disappear

Aged oak, teak and merbau take on a deep colour that new blocks simply do not have. That is why we use reclaimed blocks wherever possible, matched by species, size and grain before they go down. After the repair, parquet floor sanding brings new and old blocks to one flat, even surface.

When to call us

A hollow sound when you walk, blocks that rock or click, gaps opening along the pattern or a raised area near a radiator are all signs of failing adhesive. Loose blocks tend to loosen their neighbours, so early repairs keep costs down. Our guide to parquet restoration explains the common causes in more detail.

Why we reuse original parquet

Original blocks are numbered or kept in order as they come up, so the pattern goes back exactly as it was. It keeps the floor authentic and means only truly broken blocks need replacing. If the subfloor is part of the problem, we level or repair it before any blocks go back down.

Patterns we repair

  • Herringbone and double herringbone

  • Chevron

  • Basket weave and brick pattern

  • Borders, bands and feature panels

With the repair done and the floor sanded, new and old blocks finish as one. All restoration work is covered by our three-month service guarantee.

FAQ

Questions about parquet floor repairs

All questions
What do I need to do before you arrive?

Empty the room where possible and take down curtains that reach the floor. If you need help with heavy pieces, let us know when booking. Our guide to preparing your home has more tips.

Do you need to visit to give a price?

For many jobs, yes. Photos of the floor plus rough measurements let us give a guide price within a working day. We confirm it with a short visit before work starts, so the final quote is fixed.

How do you sand parquet without damaging it?

Because the blocks run in different directions, we use a multi-direction sanding sequence. A final pass with a fine-grit buffer removes swirl marks and leaves a flat, smooth surface.

What about the black adhesive under old parquet?

Many older parquet floors were laid on bitumen adhesive. It does not stop us restoring the floor, but loose blocks need cleaning back and re-fixing with a compatible adhesive. We check this during the survey and include it in the quote.

Can old parquet be saved?

In nearly every case, yes. We re-glue loose blocks, replace missing ones with matched or reclaimed timber, then sand and finish the whole floor so the repairs disappear. Find out more about parquet floor repairs.

Can you repair a water-damaged floor?

Often, yes. Light marks often sand away, while badly swollen or stained boards are replaced and blended in. The floor must be fully dry first, so we may check moisture levels before starting.

“Our front room was always cold because of the gaps in the boards. They filled them with pine slivers blend in perfectly and we have felt the difference already. They were upfront that filled gaps can move with the seasons, which I appreciated.”
