Floorboards Repairs
Floorboard repairs in Barnet: damaged boards replaced, creaks fixed and old patches put right.
Saving your original floorboards
Period floorboards have usually been lifted many times for pipes and cables, and few of those boards went back down neatly. Split ends, rotten sections near radiators, short patched pieces and boards that bounce underfoot are all common. Our Barnet team repairs these problems properly, so the floor is sound and ready to restore.
What we do
Swapping damaged boards for reclaimed ones of the same width and thickness
Securing loose and squeaky boards to the joists
Tidying old service cut-outs and short patched pieces
Supporting weak joists and noggins under bouncy areas
Matching old boards
Floorboard widths and thicknesses vary from house to house, so off-the-shelf boards rarely fit. We use reclaimed boards wherever we can, cut and planed to suit, so the repair has the same age and grain as the rest of the floor. Once the boards are sound, floorboards restoration sands and finishes the whole floor so everything matches.
Gaps and draughts
Gaps between old boards are common and can be draughty. Our gap filling service uses pine slivers or resin filler to close them. Wooden floors expand and shrink through the year, so gap filling is excluded from our service guarantee - we will talk you through the options.
How we secure loose boards
Most movement comes from fixings that have lost their grip or joists that have dried out and moved. We re-fix boards with screws or ring-shank nails, counter-sunk and filled so they disappear after sanding. If a section feels springy, we lift a board to inspect the joists and strengthen them where necessary. You end up with a floor that is solid, flat and quiet.
Before you lay a new finish
Sanding a floor with loose or damaged boards gives an uneven result and can make problems worse. A sound floor sands evenly and holds its finish for years. If you are planning a restoration, see our guide to restoring Victorian floorboards.

Questions about floorboards repairs
How are your prices worked out?
The cost depends on the size of the floor, its condition and the finish. Our price list shows typical starting prices, and the free survey gives you a fixed written quote.
Can damaged boards be replaced invisibly?
We match the species, width and age of your boards wherever possible. Once the floor is sanded and finished, repairs are very hard to spot. Learn more about wood floor repairs.
Will filled gaps stay closed?
Gap filling is excluded from our service guarantee. Wooden floors expand and shrink with the seasons and with movement in the building, which can open small cracks in the filler. We use the most suitable method for your floor to keep this to a minimum.
Can you fix squeaky floorboards?
Squeaks usually come from loose boards rubbing against nails or joists. We re-secure boards with screws and fix any loose noggins below. Read about why floors squeak.
Can old pine floorboards be restored?
Usually, yes. Period pine boards sand up beautifully. We punch down nails, replace split boards and sand back to fresh timber. Read our guide to Victorian floorboards for the full process.
Resin or slivers — which is better for gaps?
Smaller gaps are filled with resin mixed with fine sanding dust, so the colour matches. Wider gaps get thin pine slivers glued in and sanded flush. Our gap filling guide compares the two.
What our customers say
Quick, clean and professional
“We had the hallway and living room sanded and lacquered over two days. They protected the skirting and doors, and they hoovered up before leaving each evening.”
High Barnet
No more draughts
“Our front room was always cold because of the gaps in the boards. They filled them with pine slivers blend in perfectly and we have felt the difference already. They were upfront that filled gaps can move with the seasons, which I appreciated.”
New Barnet
Lacquered floor looking fresh
“Our lacquered oak had lots of fine scratches from the dog. A light abrade and new coat of lacquer has made it smooth and shiny again. Useful advice on felt pads and mats as well.”
