A few winters can turn a smart new deck grey, green and slippery. Fortunately, the damage is usually only skin deep, and careful sanding reveals sound, attractive timber below.

Our Barnet team applies the same care to decking as to indoor floors. The result is a deck that looks good, feels safer underfoot and is protected for seasons to come. Our guide to decking restoration after winter explains the timing.

How we restore a deck

  • Algae and green growth removed with a deep clean

  • Repairs to split or rotten boards

  • Sanding back to fresh, smooth timber

  • Two coats of UV-resistant decking oil

Timber we work with

From pressure-treated pine to tropical hardwoods, we tailor the process to the timber. Grooved boards need extra cleaning, but they come up just as well. Wooden steps and benches can be done at the same time.

Maintenance

Annual cleaning and a top-up coat of oil every one to two years keep decking at its best. Just as indoor floors benefit from re-oiling, decks need regular oil to stay water-resistant.

Is it time?

  • Grey, silvery boards that have lost their colour

  • Slippery boards, especially after rain

  • Rough, splintering surfaces

  • Old stain or oil peeling in patches

Regular care prevents water getting into the timber and causing rot. Most decks are restored in one or two days, depending on size and condition. We need a dry spell for the oil to cure, so we plan the work around the forecast. Spring and early autumn tend to give the best conditions.

Repairs and safety

We inspect the boards and visible frame as we clean. Rotten or split boards are swapped out, and protruding screws replaced so the surface is safe for bare feet. If the frame underneath needs attention, we will tell you before carrying on.

Indoor work is covered by our 3-month guarantee; ask us about how this applies to outdoor timber, which is exposed to the weather. Guide prices for decking are on our prices page.

FAQ

Questions about decking restoration

All questions
What do you need from us on the day?

A normal plug socket and parking close by is all we need. Everything runs from your normal sockets, and we bring all tools, materials and dust sheets.

When is the best time to restore decking?

Late spring to early autumn is ideal. The timber needs a few dry days so the oil can soak in properly. Our guide to decking after winter explains how to prepare.

How long does decking oil last?

Once a year is a good rule of thumb. Decks in strong sun or under trees may need it sooner. Regular oiling stops the wood drying out and greying.

Do you repair decking as well?

Yes — we replace rotten or split boards before sanding. Replacement boards are matched as closely as possible once the whole deck is oiled.

Is it worth restoring old decking?

Usually, yes. We clean, sand and treat the boards with a UV-resistant decking oil that brings back the colour and reduces slipperiness. See our decking restoration service.

How are your prices worked out?

Quick, clean and professional

“We had the hallway and living room sanded and lacquered over two days. They protected the skirting and doors, and they hoovered up before leaving each evening.”

No more draughts

“Our front room was always cold because of the gaps in the boards. They filled them with pine slivers blend in perfectly and we have felt the difference already. They were upfront that filled gaps can move with the seasons, which I appreciated.”

Lacquered floor looking fresh

“Our lacquered oak had lots of fine scratches from the dog. A light abrade and new coat of lacquer has made it smooth and shiny again. Useful advice on felt pads and mats as well.”
